I got this BYD Seal in March 2024, Excellence version, dark gray paint. As of today I've driven it for exactly 14 months, mileage just passed 22,000 kilometers. This article is my interim record of this car.

One thing to clarify upfront. I paid for this car myself, 238,000 yuan out the door. BYD has no commercial relationship with me whatsoever.

Before Buying This Car

At the end of 2023 I sold my Volkswagen Passat that I'd driven for six years. I hesitated for a long time between the Seal, Xpeng P7i, and Tesla Model 3. Test drove them four or five times. In the end I chose the Seal for two reasons: rear seat space is noticeably bigger than the Model 3, and the Blade Battery gave me slightly more peace of mind about safety.

The day I picked up the car I specifically brought a tape measure. The distance from the rear seat cushion to the front seat backrest measured 78 centimeters. I had previously measured the Model 3 at 71 centimeters. This 7-centimeter difference is very noticeable when you sit in it.

Powertrain

The Excellence version has a rear-drive single motor, maximum power 230kW. I tested 0-100 acceleration at a closed venue, best result was 5.7 seconds, 0.2 seconds faster than the official 5.9-second claim. Acceleration response is most direct when battery is above 80%. Below 30% there's a tiny bit of lag, not obvious.

This car uses BYD's self-developed 8-in-1 electric drive system. Motor, motor controller, reducer, onboard charger, DC-DC converter, power distribution box, vehicle controller, and battery management system all integrated together. I haven't taken it apart to look, so I can't evaluate the specific build quality.

The brake pedal feel took me about two weeks to adapt to. Braking force in the first 1/3 of pedal travel is weak, then suddenly gets stronger when you press deeper. A BYD engineer told me this is a characteristic of the handoff between regenerative braking and mechanical braking. After I set regenerative braking to "high," this issue improved somewhat. I got used to decelerating with regen, using mechanical brakes less.

Battery and Range

Blade Battery capacity is 82.56kWh. I recorded charging data over the past eight months. In summer the ratio of displayed range to actual range is roughly 1:0.85. In winter it drops to 1:0.68. Those few days at the end of December last year when Beijing temperature dropped to minus 10 Celsius, full charge showed 650 kilometers, actually drove less than 440 kilometers.

I installed a 7kW charger at home. Charging from 20% to 90% takes about 7 and a half hours. Used 120kW fast chargers at highway service areas three times, 30% to 80% took 28 minutes, 31 minutes, and 34 minutes respectively. The difference might be related to battery temperature.

Here's a detail. The Seal's battery has a preheating function that automatically activates when you set navigation to a charging station. Once I went to charge without using navigation, and charging speed was noticeably slower.

Driving Feel

Chassis is double wishbone front, five-link rear. Suspension tuning is on the firm side. The entrance to my apartment complex's underground garage has a section with very dense speed bumps. Rear passengers get noticeably jostled going over them. I later found a pattern: passing at 15-18 km/h is more comfortable than going slower or faster.

I'm personally quite satisfied with the steering feel. Very little play in the steering wheel, car nose responds quickly when changing lanes at highway speeds. Once I drove over 100 kilometers on mountain roads near Zhangjiakou, the handling through continuous curves made me feel this car's sporty orientation is well-deserved.

Wind noise and tire noise isolation is good below 100 km/h. Above 120 km/h, wind noise starts seeping in near the A-pillar. This car came with Continental EC6 tires, 235/45 R19. At 16,000 kilometers I switched to Michelin PS4. Tire noise improvement wasn't significant, but grip improvement was quite noticeable.

Infotainment System

I've used the DiLink system for 14 months. Some functions I rely on heavily, others I basically never touch.

Voice control recognition rate is okay. Commands like "turn on air conditioning" or "navigate to such-and-such place" are basically recognized. Compound commands like "lower the AC by two degrees" succeed maybe 70% of the time. The main screen can rotate. I use it horizontally 90% of the time, convenient for viewing navigation. I've only used portrait mode a few times when mirroring my phone to watch videos.

OTA updates have been pushed four times so far. One was last August. After that update the lane departure warning sensitivity increased a lot, became more annoying on highways. I turned off that function in settings.

This infotainment system sometimes lags. First 30 seconds after cold start, operations respond slowly. Had two or three freezes requiring restart.

Driver Assistance

This car's driver assistance is BYD's self-developed system. Hardware is 5 millimeter-wave radars, 12 ultrasonic radars, 1 front-facing camera. No lidar.

On highways I frequently use ACC adaptive cruise plus lane keeping. Performance is stable where lane markings are clear, following distance and braking timing are both reasonable. When lane markings are unclear the system frequently alerts asking me to take over.

I don't really dare to use it on city roads. Once on the Third Ring Road the car ahead suddenly merged out, revealing a stationary traffic cone. The system didn't identify it in time, I braked myself. After that incident I just drive manually in the city.

After-Sales Experience

Went to the 4S dealership five times in 14 months. First service was free, the next two services cost 380 yuan and 420 yuan respectively. Once I went in because the left rear door seal was making noise. The technician took off the seal and reinstalled it, no charge, the noise disappeared.

Another time the side mirror made noise when folding. That one wasn't fixed. The technician said the seal needed grease added. I had him add it, worked for three days then started making noise again. I got lazy about making another trip, just left it.

Other Notes

This car's trunk space is 400 liters. Fitting two 20-inch carry-on suitcases is no problem. Rear seats fold down 40/60. With them folded I once moved a 1.8-meter curtain rod, it just fit.

The frunk is much smaller than Tesla's. I measured it, can only fit maybe one laptop bag.

Body dimensions are 4800mm × 1875mm × 1460mm, wheelbase 2920mm. Fits fine in my underground garage parking spot, doors can open fully. Some older residential complex parking spots would be tight.

I turn on seat ventilation every time I get in during summer. Takes about two to three minutes before you feel the cooling. Used seat heating a few times in winter, works fast.

Assessment So Far

Overall I'm satisfied with this car. Totally sufficient for daily commuting and weekend trips. Power and handling are at the level I expected before buying. Range is basically enough in summer. Winter does get a bit anxiety-inducing. Before getting on the highway I specifically check the charging station distribution along the route.

A few things I haven't figured out yet. Like what the resale value of this car will be. Currently similar-year Seals on the used market are listed around 160,000 yuan, dropped quite a bit from what I paid. Also the long-term degradation of the Blade Battery. I plan to wait until I've driven it four or five years before evaluating.

Strengths

  • Daily commuting & weekend trips
  • Power & handling as expected
  • Summer range sufficient
  • Rear seat space advantage

Concerns

  • Winter range anxiety
  • Resale value (~160K yuan used)
  • Long-term battery degradation unknown

Final Thoughts

If someone asks whether I recommend this car, I can't give a blanket answer. Depends on specific needs. If you can install a home charger, mainly commute in the city, and have requirements for rear seat space, worth considering. If you frequently take long trips, have very cold winters, or heavily rely on driver assistance, think carefully.

This is my interim record. When this car hits 30,000 kilometers or two years, I plan to write another one.

Consider This Car If:

You can install a home charger, mainly commute in the city, and have requirements for rear seat space.
